Chintha Jerome becomes first woman to lead DYFI in Kerala, a historic first
Kollam native Chintha Jerome has been elected as the first woman State president of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in Kerala, marking a significant milestone for the youth organisation. The election took place at the organisation's 16th State Conference held in Thrissur on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
DYFI all-India president A.A. Rahim announced the new office-bearers at the conference. Alongside Ms. Jerome, former SFI State secretary and Kalliaseri MLA M. Vijin was elected as State secretary, while R. Rahul of Alappuzha was chosen as treasurer.
Ms. Jerome's elevation is being viewed as a progressive step for the youth organisation, which has, for the first time in its history, chosen a woman to head its State unit. She brings with her a rich background in student and youth politics, having risen through the ranks of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) before joining DYFI.
A doctorate holder in English literature from the University of Kerala, Ms. Jerome first entered public life through student politics. She served as chairperson of the University of Kerala Union in 2007-08 and was later elected to the university's Senate and Syndicate. Her academic and administrative experience is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the organisation's activities.
From 2016 to 2023, she served two consecutive terms as chairperson of the Kerala State Youth Commission. During her tenure, she introduced several initiatives, including the Youth Brigade programme, which focused on engaging young people in constructive activities and skill development. Her work at the commission was widely acknowledged as path-breaking in the field of youth welfare.
Apart from her political and organisational roles, Ms. Jerome is also an author of three books, reflecting her academic and literary interests. Her leadership is seen as a sign of the changing face of youth politics in Kerala, where women are increasingly taking on prominent roles.
The DYFI State Conference, held in Thrissur, brought together delegates from across the state to deliberate on organisational matters and future programmes. The election of new office-bearers is part of the organisation's routine democratic process, and the new team is expected to focus on issues affecting young people, including employment, education, and social justice.
With this appointment, Ms. Jerome takes on a significant responsibility at a time when youth organisations across the country are redefining their roles in a rapidly changing social and political landscape. Her experience and academic background are likely to serve her well in guiding DYFI's activities in Kerala.
