Chinese AI Startup Moonshot Halts New Subscriptions After Overwhelming Demand for Kimi K3

Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI has temporarily paused new signups for its AI chatbot platform just one week after releasing Kimi K3, its latest AI model. The company cited unexpected demand that has strained its available GPU resources.

In a post on X on Sunday, July 19, Moonshot AI stated that Kimi K3 had received far more interest than anticipated, leading to capacity issues. The company said it is prioritising existing customers and working to add capacity in batches to reopen subscriptions.

Kimi K3 is reported to have performance comparable to leading models from US rivals OpenAI and Anthropic on some key tasks. The pause in new signups indicates the rapid growth and infrastructure challenges faced by AI startups amid a global GPU shortage.

Moonshot AI did not provide a timeline for when new subscriptions will resume but assured users that they are scaling up resources as quickly as possible.
