Chennai police nab two for duping over 100 engineering graduates with fake job promises

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Greater Chennai Police has arrested two individuals accused of defrauding more than 100 engineering graduates by promising lucrative jobs in multinational software companies.

The arrests followed a complaint from R. Pradeep Raja, a 27-year-old M.Sc. graduate from Perungudi employed at a private software firm. He alleged that Silambarasan (35) of Tiruvannamalai, who runs Sharaa Info Developers Private Ltd. at Maduravoyal, along with S. Prabhu (41) of Maduravoyal and others, promised to secure him a high-paying job at companies such as Robert Bosch.

Trusting their assurances, Pradeep Raja paid ₹2.69 lakh to the accused in 2025. However, the promised employment never materialised. He further alleged that the accused had collected more than ₹2 crore from over 100 job seekers without providing jobs or refunding the money.

Based on the complaint, the CCB's Employment Fraud Investigation Wing registered a case and launched an investigation. Under the supervision of Additional Commissioner of Police P.C. Thenmozhi, a special team traced and arrested the absconding accused. Silambarasan was apprehended in Tiruvannamalai district, while Prabhu was taken into custody at Maduravoyal in Chennai.

Police seized two mobile phones and relevant documents from the accused. According to investigators, more than 100 victims have so far approached the CCB with complaints. Authorities suspect additional victims may come forward, and further investigation is ongoing.

Explaining the modus operandi, a CCB officer stated that the accused targeted job seekers who had uploaded their resumes on leading employment portals. They allegedly contacted candidates, promising placements in top multinational software companies in exchange for payments ranging from ₹3 lakh to ₹7 lakh.

After collecting the money, the accused reportedly asked candidates to work at two firms—Sharaa Info Developers and Holy Angels—under the pretext of training, but failed to secure jobs in the promised companies. Police noted that most victims were engineering graduates.

The accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
