Chennai Police Arrest 77 in Week-Long Anti-Drug Operation
The Greater Chennai Police have arrested 77 individuals and registered 38 cases during a week-long anti-drug enforcement drive conducted from June 14 to June 20, according to official statements.
The operation, carried out across all 12 police districts under the supervision of Deputy Commissioners of Police, led to the seizure of 22 kg of ganja, 831 grams of methamphetamine, 6 mg of opium, 2 mg of cocaine, 1,222 tablets, and cash amounting to ₹1,04,360.
Special teams comprising Assistant Commissioners and Inspectors have been continuously monitoring and taking action against those involved in possessing, transporting, storing, and selling narcotic substances. The Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) also contributed by gathering intelligence and tracking individuals involved in the sale of narcotics and synthetic drugs, as well as their associates.
Based on intelligence inputs, suspects have been apprehended and handed over to respective police stations for further legal proceedings. Authorities also confiscated four two-wheelers, one autorickshaw, one car, and five mobile phones allegedly used in drug trafficking activities.
The crackdown intensified after the police received reports of increased drug activity in certain areas. The department has vowed to continue such operations to curb the illegal drug trade in the city.
