Chandigarh Building Collapse Claims Two Lives; Rescue Operations Complete
Two people died after a two-storey building collapsed in the Industrial Area Phase-2, Chandigarh on Saturday (July 4, 2026), officials said. The deceased were among six persons pulled out from the debris during a rescue operation that lasted over five hours.
According to officials, four people were initially rescued and taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32. Later, two more were extracted and rushed to the same hospital. Ravneet Kaur, Director-Principal at GMCH-32, confirmed two fatalities. Vishal Guglani, Medical Superintendent at GMCH-32, said three injured persons were undergoing treatment and were in stable condition.
Teams from the fire department, police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) responded promptly. NDRF Deputy Commandant Deepak Singh stated that the nearest team from Panchkula reached the site without delay. All trapped individuals were rescued, and an extensive final search was conducted to ensure no other victims remained.
The administration cordoned off the area and deployed heavy earth-moving machines. As a precaution, the adjacent building was vacated. Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi, who visited the site, informed reporters that the building was old and undergoing renovation when it collapsed.
Officials announced a probe to determine the cause of the collapse. This incident follows a previous building collapse in Sector-17 last year, where a vacant structure declared unsafe came down without causing injuries.
