Centre Orders Extensive E25 Fuel Testing Before Nationwide Rollout Decision

The Union Government has announced a comprehensive testing programme for E25, a fuel blend containing 25% ethanol, before taking a final decision on its nationwide rollout. The move comes as part of India's push to increase ethanol blending in petrol to reduce emissions and cut oil imports.

Sources in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed that the testing will evaluate engine performance, fuel efficiency, and environmental impact across various vehicle types. The tests will be conducted in collaboration with automotive manufacturers, research institutions, and state-run oil marketing companies.

"We need to ensure that E25 is safe and suitable for Indian vehicles and climatic conditions," a ministry official said. The government aims to gather data on fuel economy, emissions, and any potential engine modifications required.

India currently blends 10% ethanol (E10) in petrol, with a target to raise it to 20% by 2025. The E25 blend is seen as a step toward achieving the 20% target earlier or testing higher blends. However, challenges include ensuring sufficient ethanol production and compatibility with existing vehicles.

The testing phase is expected to last several months, after which the government will decide on a phased rollout. The automotive industry has been asked to provide feedback on warranty and engine durability issues.

Environmental groups have welcomed the move but caution that ethanol blending must be balanced with food security concerns, as ethanol is primarily produced from sugarcane and corn.
