Centre Assures Withdrawal of FIRs Against NEET Protesters, Assam and Bihar Issue Notifications

The Centre's representatives have assured the withdrawal of First Information Reports (FIRs) and the release of those arrested during protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination, according to a political party that led the agitation. The party claimed early Wednesday that draft notifications from the Bihar and Assam governments were shared during late-night talks, guaranteeing no further legal action against protesters.

In a statement, the party's chief spokesperson said government representatives met them for two to three hours after a press conference, sharing copies of the notifications. They added that the Union government and other states ruled by the BJP and its allies are expected to issue similar guarantees soon. The party earlier shared the Assam government's order on social media, confirming the withdrawal of cases and release of detainees.

The Assam government had announced on Monday that it would withdraw criminal cases against protesters. According to an official statement, five cases were registered in connection with the demonstrations, leading to the arrest of 13 individuals. The government said it decided not to pursue adverse legal action for protest-related cases registered before 6 pm on July 26, 2026, and that the process to withdraw all such cases, regardless of the stage of investigation or trial, would be initiated in accordance with the law. It also said authorities would review arrests and ensure release of those detained, and no further proceedings would be initiated.

The NEET-UG protest was called off on July 25 after the Union Education Minister resigned. The government reached an agreement with the protesting party and activist Sonam Wangchuk, committing to withdraw cases, prevent police action, and introduce legislation to curb examination paper leaks.
