Centre allocates ₹1,000 crore for rural roads, sanctions 1 lakh houses in West Bengal

The Union government has allocated ₹1,000 crore for the construction of 2,400 km of rural roads in West Bengal under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, and has sanctioned the construction of one lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Tuesday.

Mr. Adhikari made the announcement after a meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Kolkata. Mr. Chouhan said the Rural Welfare Ministry has sanctioned ₹8,508 crore for West Bengal for nine months until March 31, 2027, under the rural job scheme VB-G RAM G.

“The total outlay will exceed ₹12,064 crore with the State government’s contribution,” Mr. Chouhan added.

Addressing reporters, Mr. Adhikari said, “The Centre has given West Bengal ₹1,000 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in the first phase for construction of 2,400 km of roads.” He also stated that the Union Minister handed over the sanction for one lakh houses under the PM Awaas Yojana to him and Panchayat Minister Dilip Ghosh.

At the press conference, Mr. Chouhan noted that infrastructure works worth ₹82,492 crore had been undertaken in West Bengal but could not be completed, according to him, due to non-cooperation by the previous government. “All impediments in the path of completing these projects have been removed by the Suvendu Adhikari dispensation,” he said, assuring that infrastructure in the state will now be developed at a fast pace.
