Nikitha Godishala Murder: Suspect Arjun Sharma Arrested in Agra, US Extradition Awaited

An Indian man accused of stabbing his former roommate to death in the United States has been arrested in Agra, India, after eight months on the run. Arjun Sharma (26) was taken into custody by a team from Hyderabad police while investigating a separate cheating case. He is expected to be extradited to the US, where he faces first- and second-degree murder charges in the death of Nikitha Godishala (27).

Godishala, a resident of Ellicott City, Maryland, was reported missing on January 2. Her body was later found in Sharma's apartment in Columbia, Maryland, with multiple stab wounds. Howard County police said her death occurred on December 31, 2024. According to information communicated to her family, authorities in India were informed on January 4 that Nikitha had sustained multiple stab wounds and that her death was believed to have occurred on New Year's Eve.

Police have described Sharma as Godishala's ex-boyfriend, but her father, Anand Godishala, has disputed that, saying the two were roommates. He has also said he believes the killing was financially motivated.

In India, the cheating case against Sharma was registered in Telangana in April, following a complaint by Godishala's father. The complaint alleged that Sharma had taken money from Nikitha and failed to return it. During the investigation, Hyderabad police traced Sharma to a flat in Agra. A senior police official said a notice was issued to him in connection with the cheating case, and central authorities were informed because of the pending murder charge and a non-bailable warrant against him.

Sharma was later produced before the Patiala House Court in New Delhi, which remanded him on August 25 in connection with the murder case. The Howard County Police Department said it has been notified by international authorities that Sharma is now in custody in India and is expected to be extradited to the US, though no timeline has been given for his return.

Godishala had been living in the US for four years and worked as a data and strategy analyst. Her family, based in Hyderabad, welcomed the arrest and called it an important breakthrough. In a statement, the family said Sharma lost his job around August–September 2024 and subsequently borrowed money from Nikitha and her family members. They said financial disputes over money allegedly owed to Nikitha existed before her death, and that Sharma also had financial dealings with others in the US.

The case has drawn attention on both sides of the world, highlighting how criminal investigations can cross international borders. While the extradition process remains pending, the arrest in Agra marks a significant step toward justice for Nikitha Godishala and her family.
