CBSE Class 12 Re-evaluation: Many Students See Sharp Score Hikes Amid OSM Glitches

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released re-evaluation results for Class 12 students who applied after concerns over the new on-screen marking (OSM) system. Many students reported significant increases in their marks, with some gaining over 20 points. The CBSE introduced OSM for the first time in the 2026-27 academic year, but the transition was marred by complaints of blurry answer sheets, missing pages, and evaluation errors.

More than 1.6 lakh candidates applied for re-evaluation. As of June 21, results for 1.39 lakh students have been declared; the rest will follow in phases. Across the country, students shared instances of improved scores. A student from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, saw his Physics marks rise from 71 to 90, with theory marks jumping from 41 to 60. A teacher from a private school in West Bengal noted that six students saw significant revision in History: one student went from 74 to 97, another from 72 to 87. In some cases, the school topper changed after the revised scores, affecting college admissions that had already begun based on earlier marks.

A CBSE evaluator, speaking anonymously, described the OSM rollout as a 'complete mess.' The board announced the switch to OSM only two weeks before evaluation began. Some answer scripts were not fully scanned and were rejected. Teachers in remote areas, unfamiliar with computers, struggled with the system.

Students in Odisha and Delhi also reported modest gains, such as 12 marks in Chemistry and five in English. The CBSE has not released official data on how many applicants saw increases, but stated that results for 87% of applicants have been declared and the process will be completed soon.

The original Class 12 results were announced on May 13 for about 17.69 lakh candidates. The post-result process included opportunities to obtain scanned copies of answer books (May 19-25) and to apply for verification or re-evaluation (June 2-7). Candidates whose verification showed 'No change' can still inspect their answer books at regional offices.

The CBSE has not commented on the overall scale of errors or whether the OSM system will be revised for future exams.
