CBI Nabs KAPL Managing Director in ₹15 Lakh Bribery Case; Cash and Gold Seized

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Anurag Danayak, Managing Director of Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Limited (KAPL), in a bribery case after laying a trap in Noida. KAPL is a state government undertaking based in Bengaluru.

According to the CBI, Danayak allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹15 lakh from a Bhopal-based authorised service agent of KAPL. The bribe was sought for approving the firm's Service Agent Agreement, clearing pending applications for the current financial year, assigning additional government institutions in Madhya Pradesh, and seeking a share of the agent's commission from medicine sales.

CBI officials caught Danayak red-handed while allegedly accepting ₹5 lakh as part payment of the demanded bribe on Wednesday in Noida. The operation was conducted following a complaint from the service agent.

Searches at Danayak's residence and office premises in Bengaluru, Noida, and Jabalpur led to the seizure of approximately ₹75 lakh in cash, foreign currency worth about ₹4 lakh, 697 grams of gold jewellery and coins valued at around ₹86 lakh, and property documents related to a residential flat.

The CBI stated that the investigation is ongoing. The accused will be produced before a court, and further legal proceedings will follow. The agency is examining documents and digital evidence to determine if other individuals were involved.

The arrest comes as part of the CBI's efforts to tackle corruption in public sector undertakings. The case highlights the agency's use of trap operations to catch officials demanding bribes.
