In Madhya Pradesh's Datia seat, the election follows the disqualification of Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The BJP has fielded first-time candidate Ashutosh Tiwari, while the Congress has nominated Ghanshyam Singh, a two-time former MLA and member of the erstwhile royal family. The seat has traditionally been associated with former state home minister Narottam Mishra, who represented it from 2008 to 2018 but lost in 2023. This time, a change in candidate has led to protests by Mishra's supporters, which may influence voter behaviour.

In Gujarat's Manjalpur seat, voting is taking place following the death of sitting BJP MLA Yogeshbhai Narandas Patel, who held the seat for three consecutive terms. The main contenders are BJP's Satish Govindbhai Patel, a former Vadodara Municipal Corporation councillor, and Congress's Bhikhabhai Rabari, a former minister. The BJP won a landslide victory in the 2022 state elections, taking 156 of 182 seats, and is expected to put up a strong fight in this by-election.

The results are being seen as a test of the BJP's electoral strength in these states, particularly given the recent student unrest.
