Border Roads Organisation Restores Vital Kishtwar Bridge in 12 Days After Cloudburst Tragedy
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has restored a critical road link in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district within 12 days, reconnecting the remote Machail region with Gulabgarh. The restoration comes after a cloudburst in August killed 65 people at Chishoti and washed away the existing bridge, severing the only road to Machail.
The newly operational 140-foot triple double reinforced Bailey bridge was launched after extensive site preparation, including construction of abutments, transportation of bridging stores, and development of approach roads. The work was carried out under challenging terrain and weather conditions.
Jammu-based defence spokesperson Colonel Sunil Bartwal said, 'The restoration marks the end of a prolonged disruption caused by the devastating cloudburst, which washed away the existing bridge at Chishoti and severed the only road link to the remote Machail region.' He added that the operation involved a coordinated effort by BRO personnel.
The bridge's operationalisation restores connectivity for residents and enables movement of essential supplies to the region. The BRO's rapid response highlights its capability in disaster management and infrastructure development in difficult areas.
