Bomb blast at Bangladesh student rally injures three, MP present
At least three people were injured in a bomb explosion at a student-led rally in Savar, near Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Monday night. The incident occurred during a gathering of the newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP), which is led by students who oppose former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. NCP convener and Dhaka-11 MP Nahid Islam, a key figure in the July 2024 revolt that led to Hasina's ouster, was on stage at the time of the blast.
Arifur Rahman Tuhin, joint chief coordinator of the NCP, confirmed the incident to the Dhaka Tribune. 'Savar NCP's July march came under attack, leaving at least three people injured. They have been taken to Enam Medical College Hospital for treatment. Their identities could not be confirmed immediately,' he said.
The explosion comes amid heightened political tensions in Bangladesh following the July 2024 student-led uprising that resulted in the resignation and departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The NCP, formed by student activists, has been organizing rallies to consolidate support for its political agenda.
Local authorities have not yet commented on the blast, and no group has claimed responsibility. The injured are receiving medical care, and their conditions are reported to be stable. Further investigations are underway.
