Tamil Nadu Assures Kerala of Reviewing Construction Material Transport Curbs

Tamil Nadu has assured Kerala that it will review the restrictions imposed on the transportation of construction materials to the neighbouring state. The assurance came from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay during a meeting with Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan on the sidelines of the Southern Zonal Council meeting in Mahabalipuram on Thursday.

The Tamil Nadu government had earlier decided to regulate the transportation of construction materials, including rough stones, khandas, boulders, M-sand, metal jelly, ballast, mill stones, and stones used for building and road construction to other states. These restrictions were introduced to ensure adequate supplies within Tamil Nadu, which is witnessing significant infrastructure development.

According to a statement issued by the Kerala Chief Minister's Office on Friday, Mr. Vijay informed Mr. Satheesan that the Tamil Nadu government would consider exempting Kerala from these restrictions. Mr. Satheesan had urged Tamil Nadu to review the decision, citing the special circumstances in Kerala, which relies heavily on construction materials from its neighbour for various public and private projects.

The two chief ministers agreed that officials from the respective states would hold further discussions on the matter, and an appropriate decision would be taken soon. This development follows an earlier letter written by Mr. Satheesan to his Tamil Nadu counterpart requesting a review of the restrictions, indicating that the issue has been a matter of bilateral concern for some time.

The construction materials in question are essential for infrastructure projects, road building, and housing. Kerala has argued that the restrictions disrupt its construction sector and affect ongoing development work. Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, has maintained that its priority is to meet domestic demand, especially with rising urbanisation and industrial activity within the state.

The meeting on the sidelines of the Southern Zonal Council provided a platform for the two leaders to discuss this bilateral issue. The zonal council is an important forum for inter-state cooperation and conflict resolution, bringing together southern states to address shared concerns. The assurance of a review is seen as a constructive step toward resolving the matter through dialogue and mutual understanding.

Both governments have expressed a commitment to maintaining smooth interstate relations while addressing their respective developmental needs. The upcoming discussions between officials are expected to focus on finding a balanced approach that accommodates Kerala's requirements without compromising Tamil Nadu's domestic supply considerations.

The outcome of these talks will be closely watched by the construction industry and stakeholders in both states, as a decision could have implications for project timelines and material availability. The assurance given by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister signals a willingness to consider the concerns of a neighbouring state while balancing its own interests, reflecting a spirit of cooperative federalism.
