BJP Slams TVK Government Over Biscuits Replacing Nutritious Breakfast for School Students

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu has criticised the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government over an incident where biscuits were reportedly distributed to students instead of a nutritious meal under the state's Breakfast Scheme.

BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran on Sunday, June 21, 2026, referred to reports that about 40 students at a primary school in Vilathikulam, Thoothukudi district, received biscuit packets instead of a proper breakfast.

“The government under Chief Minister Joseph Vijay could not even properly implement this welfare programme which was brought about with the good intention that students from the poor and downtrodden sections should study well without hunger,” Nagenthran said.

The BJP leader rejected any explanation citing an increase in student numbers as the cause for the shortage, arguing that the government should have planned according to the actual enrolment.

The Breakfast Scheme is a key welfare initiative of the TVK government aimed at ensuring that children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds receive a nutritious meal at school. The reported deviation from the scheme's guidelines has sparked political debate. The TVK government has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
