BJP Seeks Probe into Alleged Distribution of Substandard Rice by TVK MLA in Madurai

The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for an inquiry and action against a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) legislator over allegations of distributing poor-quality rice to the public. The incident occurred during a function in Madurai held to mark the birthday of TVK founder and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran, in a social media post on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, expressed shock over the alleged distribution by Madurai West MLA S.R. Thangapandi. Nagenthran accused the MLA of passing off government welfare measures as personal favours, calling the act shameful.

According to reports, recipients of the rice raised objections about its quality, prompting authorities to collect samples for testing. Nagenthran demanded a thorough investigation and, if anyone is found responsible, that police take appropriate action.

The rice distribution was part of celebrations for Chief Minister Vijay's birthday, an event that drew both supporters and critics. The BJP's demand adds to political tensions surrounding the incident, which has raised questions about the quality of goods provided at public events.
