BJP MP Anurag Thakur Files Privilege Notice Against Rahul Gandhi Over Lok Sabha Remarks

Bharatiya Janata Party MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Thursday submitted a notice of breach of privilege and contempt of the House against Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.

The notice was given to Speaker Om Birla, alleging that Mr. Gandhi used unparliamentary and derogatory language and made grave, unsubstantiated allegations against Home Minister Amit Shah during a debate on July 29, 2026.

In the three-page notice, Mr. Thakur requested the Speaker to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee for a detailed inquiry and appropriate action, including a direction for Mr. Gandhi to tender an unconditional apology to the House and to Mr. Shah.

During the debate on The Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill 2026, Mr. Gandhi had criticised the government over student protests in the capital. He made remarks that led to strong objections from the treasury benches, and parts of his speech were expunged from records.

Mr. Gandhi began by referencing three categories of people, which the ruling side took as an indirect attack on the BJP and its supporters. He then alleged that Mr. Shah was not present in the House because he was 'scared', and made further allegations that were denied by the ruling side.

The BJP accused Mr. Gandhi of spreading falsehoods and demanded an apology for allegedly misusing parliamentary privilege. Speaker Om Birla asked Mr. Gandhi to provide evidence for his allegations.

Under Lok Sabha rules, a notice for breach of privilege (Rule 222) is submitted to the Speaker, who examines it to determine whether a prima facie case exists. If allowed, the matter may be discussed on the floor or referred to the Privileges Committee for a detailed examination and report.
