BJP-backed Independent and JMM Candidate Win Jharkhand Rajya Sabha Seats

In the Rajya Sabha elections held in Jharkhand on [date], two seats were filled. Baijnath Ram, candidate of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), secured one seat, while Parimal Nathwani, an Independent candidate supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won the other.

According to official sources, Ram received 30 votes, Nathwani polled 28 votes, Congress candidate Pranav Jha got 19 votes, and three votes were declared invalid. The results indicate that Nathwani's victory was aided by cross-voting from MLAs of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

The Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India's Parliament, is elected by members of the state legislative assembly through a system of single transferable vote. In this election, the JMM-led coalition and the BJP-backed candidate secured the required number of votes to win.

The cross-voting highlights the fluid nature of political alliances in the state. The RJD and CPI(ML) are part of the opposition alliance but their MLAs chose to support the BJP-backed candidate. No official statements have been issued by the parties regarding the reasons for the cross-voting.
