Bill to Remove PM, Chief Ministers on Hold as Parliamentary Panel Seeks More Talks

The Joint Committee of Parliament examining the Bill that seeks to remove the Prime Minister, Union Ministers and Chief Ministers detained for 30 continuous days on serious charges has decided to postpone the adoption of its draft report.

The decision was taken on Friday (July 17, 2026) after members felt that more discussions were needed, according to committee chairperson Aparajita Sarangi.

The Joint Committee on the 130th Amendment Bill had circulated a draft report with five recommendations to members recently. When the Committee began voting on each recommendation separately, it was decided that further consultations with stakeholders and more discussions among members were necessary.

AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and NCP (Sharad Pawar) MP Supriya Sule had submitted their dissent notes but withdrew them after the panel decided to defer adoption.

"The joint parliamentary committee unanimously said that we needed more consultations with stakeholders," Ms. Sarangi said.

The Bill, if passed, would allow for the removal of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers and Chief Ministers who are detained for 30 consecutive days on serious charges. The deferral means the report will not be submitted to Parliament as scheduled, and further deliberations are expected.
