Bengaluru's Second Airport to Be Located in South District, Reveals Karnataka CM
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Wednesday announced that the second airport for Bengaluru will be located in Bengaluru South district. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with officials, he outlined the key criteria guiding the selection: minimal displacement of human settlements, lower land prices, and technical feasibility.
“We do not want the project to result in large-scale displacement. It’s ok if we have to rehabilitate only a few houses. I have asked the authorities concerned to pick a location which has lesser number of human habitations, lesser hills and that is technically feasible,” the Chief Minister said.
Shivakumar also noted that choosing an area where land prices are not too high would prevent a heavy burden on the government for compensation. This was his first meeting on the proposed second airport since assuming office.
Notably, Bengaluru South is the Chief Minister’s home district. A high-level team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had inspected three candidate sites in April 2025 — Choodahalli and Somanahalli on Kanakapura Road, and another location on the Nelamangala-Kunigal Road — and submitted a report to the government.
Although the government has engaged a Singapore-based consultancy to study the feasibility of all three shortlisted locations, government sources indicate that the two sites on Kanakapura Road are the frontrunners. Further details on the timeline and next steps are expected after the feasibility study is completed.
