Bengaluru NEET Centre Denies Entry to Late Arrivals, Rule Adherence Questioned

On Sunday, as lakhs of candidates across India appeared for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, several aspirants at a Bengaluru centre were denied entry for arriving late, sparking debate over the enforcement of rules by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The incident occurred at Government Ramnarayan Chellaram College on Palace Road, where students arriving after the scheduled gate-closing time found themselves barred from entering. Viral videos showed groups of distressed students standing outside the locked gates, with one individual even attempting to climb over the barrier.

The re-examination, conducted from 2 pm to 5.15 pm, was held under heightened security measures. According to NTA guidelines, candidates are required to report at the examination centre at least one hour before the start of the test. Those arriving late are not permitted entry, regardless of the reason.

This strict adherence to timing has ignited a discussion about the balance between discipline and compassion. Proponents argue that punctuality is essential for fairness and smooth conduct of examinations, while critics point to the high stakes of NEET and the potential for genuine delays, such as traffic or transport issues.

Similar incidents have been reported in previous exams, with students and parents often pleading for leniency. However, the NTA has consistently maintained that rules must be uniformly applied to ensure equal opportunity for all candidates.

The debate highlights the tension between administrative efficiency and individual circumstances in high-pressure competitive exams. As the NEET-UG is a gateway to medical and dental courses, the consequences of denial are significant for the affected students.

No official statement from the NTA regarding this specific incident has been released as of now. The agency is expected to review the matter, though typically it has upheld the no-entry policy for latecomers.
