Atiq Ahmed's youngest son Abaan killed in road accident in Jhansi
Abaan Ahmed, the youngest son of late politician Atiq Ahmed, was killed in a road accident on Thursday morning on the Jhansi-Kanpur National Highway in Uttar Pradesh. Police said the car he was travelling in lost control and hit a divider under the Poonch police station limits in Jhansi district.
Mr. Abaan was on his way to meet his elder brother, who is lodged in a jail in Jhansi. Another person, identified as Sonu, son of Raja, also lost his life in the crash. Two others, critically injured, were admitted to the Montha Community Health Centre.
The district police issued a statement saying that the Poonch police station and the Montha Circle Officer reached the scene promptly. “The police carried out prompt relief and rescue operations and immediately sent all the injured to Montha CHC for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken into custody and necessary legal proceedings, including the Panchayatnama, are being carried out as per the rules,” the statement said. It added that peace and law and order at the spot were normal.
Abaan was the son of Atiq Ahmed, a former Member of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh who was fatally shot in April 2023 while being escorted by police. In the same month, Atiq's son Asad was killed in an encounter with police in Jhansi. The Ahmed family has been in the news for years due to criminal cases involving several of its members.
Thursday's crash is being treated as an accident, but police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances. The highway is known for heavy traffic and frequent accidents, and officials have urged drivers to be cautious. No foul play has been reported so far.
The death has once again brought attention to the fortunes of a family that has witnessed repeated violence and loss. However, according to authorities, the latest incident is purely a road accident and there is no indication of any criminal involvement at this stage.
