Bangladesh Speaker Takes Charge as Acting President After Sahabuddin Resigns

Bangladesh President Mohammed Sahabuddin resigned on Friday, citing health and personal reasons. His resignation was accepted immediately, triggering the constitutional process for an interim successor.

National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has assumed the role of acting president, as per Article 54 of Bangladesh's Constitution, which mandates the Speaker to discharge presidential duties in the event of a vacancy. Ahmed was officially welcomed at the parliament building with floral bouquets, a customary gesture for assuming high office.

Among those greeting him were National Parliament Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal, Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam, Attorney General Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, and National Parliament Secretariat Secretary Barrister Md Golam Sorwar Bhuiyan, according to a press release from the Parliament Secretariat.

Mohammed Sahabuddin, who served as president since April 2023, did not provide further details on his decision. His tenure was marked by routine constitutional duties, as the presidency in Bangladesh is largely ceremonial. The election for a full-time president is expected to be held within the constitutional timeframe, as per parliamentary procedure.

The transition is seen as a routine constitutional step, with political analysts noting that the acting president will oversee the functioning of the state until a permanent successor is elected by the parliament.
