Assam Police Arrest Two ULFA(I) Suspects, Recover Assault Rifles and Grenades
The Assam Police have arrested two individuals suspected to be members of the banned United Liberation of Asom (Independent) in Tinsukia district, officials said on Friday. The operation, conducted with assistance from central agencies, took place at Jagun, a town near the border with Arunachal Pradesh.
The suspects were identified as Humenjyoti Baruah, 27, and Papu Moran, 30. Police recovered two AK-56 assault rifles, two hand grenades, 172 rounds of ammunition, opioids, and jungle survival kits from their possession.
Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar stated that preliminary investigations suggest the duo was tasked with carrying out indiscriminate attacks in Tinsukia town to create a climate of fear. “The planned modus operandi indicates the influence of external actors to destabilise the region,” he said.
According to police, the suspects had entered Assam from Myanmar via Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang and Jairampur towns. Changlang is part of the Tirap-Changlang-Longding (TCL) cluster, where several factions of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) are active. Members of ULFA(I) and other Assam-based extremist groups reportedly use routes through these districts to reach their clandestine camps in Myanmar’s Sagaing Division, with support from NSCN factions.
Both suspects have been booked under relevant sections of the law and are being questioned to uncover further details about their network and plans.
