Anurag Kumar Takes Over as Delhi Police Commissioner: Career at a Glance

IPS officer Anurag Kumar has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, replacing Satish Golcha. The appointment was announced through an order issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on June 17, 2026.

Anurag Kumar, a 1994-batch officer of the AGMUT cadre (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories), will assume charge with immediate effect. The Ministry's order stated that he will serve as Commissioner until further orders.

Kumar's career in the Indian Police Service spans over three decades. After clearing the UPSC examination in 1994, he served in various capacities in Delhi, rising to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) by 2010. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016 for his contributions to domestic security operations.

In 2014, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet empanelled him to hold administrative ranks up to Inspector General (IG). He was later empanelled to hold Director General (DG) level commands in 2025, leading to his current appointment as Delhi Police Commissioner.

Former Commissioner Satish Golcha has been directed to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, for his next assignment. Golcha's tenure, which began in August 2025, has ended ahead of schedule.
