Andhra Pradesh sees 32.8% rainfall deficit as June rains lag
Andhra Pradesh recorded a cumulative rainfall deficit of 32.8 per cent as of June 18, according to data from the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES). The state received 45.2 mm of rainfall between June 1 and June 18, against a normal of 67.3 mm for the period.
Of the 28 districts, 20 reported either deficient or large deficient rainfall. The districts of Polavaram, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, and Annamayya recorded deficits exceeding 60 per cent. Eight districts — Kurnool, Anantapur, Nandyal, Sri Sathya Sai, NTR, Bapatla, Guntur, and Palnadu — reported normal or excess rainfall.
On June 17, North and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh received substantial rain, with the highest accumulation of 96.91 mm recorded in Vepada, Vizianagaram district. However, the following day, fewer than 20 stations across the state reported light to moderate showers, the highest being 54 mm in Markapuram district.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heatwave conditions in isolated coastal areas on June 19, with hot and humid weather likely across the state on June 19 and 20. Other areas may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
According to the IMD's weekly forecast, between June 21 and 25, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are expected to receive limited rainfall, while North Coastal Andhra Pradesh may see light showers.
