AIMIM Leader Calls Government 'Dictator' at Jantar Mantar Protest

During a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, AIMIM leader and former MP Imtiaz Jaleel accused the Union government of behaving like a 'dictator' and asserted that citizens have sent a clear message that 'enough is enough'. Speaking to demonstrators on Thursday, Jaleel said the government should not take the people for granted.

The protest, organised by several opposition parties and civil society groups, centred on issues ranging from rising unemployment and inflation to alleged attacks on democratic institutions. Jaleel, representing the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), was among the prominent leaders who addressed the gathering.

'The youth have given a message of 'enough is enough' to the dictator government in this country,' Jaleel said. 'They have shown that the people will not tolerate being taken for granted.' His remarks drew both cheers and counter-chants from the crowd.

The use of the term 'dictator' by an elected representative drew sharp reactions from the ruling party. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nalin Kohli dismissed the comment as 'irresponsible hyperbole'. 'India is a vibrant democracy where every citizen has the right to protest peacefully. To label the government a dictatorship is not only false but also undermines the democratic process,' Kohli said in a statement.

Political analysts note that such strong language reflects the deepening polarisation in Indian politics. 'While the term 'dictator' may be strong, it resonates with a section of the electorate that feels marginalised by the current government's policies,' said Dr. Meera Kosambi, a political commentator. 'However, it is equally important to respect the electoral mandate and conduct debate within constitutional bounds.'

The protest at Jantar Mantar, a historic site for demonstrations, saw participation from various groups, including student unions, farmers' associations, and human rights activists. Speakers highlighted concerns over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and alleged violations of press freedom.

Security was tight, with police deploying additional personnel to prevent any untoward incidents. The protest concluded peacefully, with organisers announcing plans for future agitations.
