Ahmedabad deluge: 295 mm rain in 24 hours, fourth-highest ever; over a dozen rescued
Ahmedabad received 295 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending 6 am on Friday, making it the city's fourth-highest single-day rainfall on record, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD reported that Ahmedabad recorded 294.6 mm of rainfall between 6 am on Thursday and 6 am on Friday. This is the highest rainfall in a single day since 2000, when the city recorded 325.9 mm.
The heavy downpour left several parts of the city flooded. Residential societies, roads, and underpasses were submerged early Friday morning. Abandoned vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, were seen on roads such as the 132-foot Ring Road AEC Bridge.
Residents of Sabarmati, Chharanagar, and Rabarivas were stranded on their rooftops after water entered their homes. The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services, responding to calls to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation control room, rescued nearly a dozen people, including senior citizens over the age of 70, and placed them with relatives and locals.
