After Girl's Murder, Delhi Police Seeks Shelters for Homeless, Cab Driver Screening

The Delhi Police is set to propose the construction of shelters for homeless individuals and a robust screening policy for drivers registered with ride-hailing apps, following the rape and murder of a 10-year-old homeless girl in the Mehrauli area on Monday.

The victim, the eldest of four siblings, lived with her parents on the streets of South Delhi. The family from Bihar had arrived in the capital four months ago in search of work but were forced to sleep on the roadside due to lack of steady income, police said.

Sources told The Indian Express that the proposals will be made in separate letters to South Delhi's District Magistrate and the government. The letter to the District Magistrate will also recommend providing homeless people with jobs in organised sectors to help them move off the streets.
