Munnar Panchayat Urges Swift Bailey Bridge Construction to Tackle Tourist Surge

The Munnar panchayat has urged the Kerala government to urgently construct a Bailey bridge in the town to handle the expected influx of tourists during the upcoming Onam festival and the Neelakurinji flowering season. The demand comes after a mudslide and road cave-in disrupted traffic on the main Kochi–Dhanushkodi National Highway route through Munnar last month, forcing vehicles onto a narrow and weakened bridge near the police station.

The Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana), which blooms once every 12 years, is expected to cover the hills of Chokramudy, Meeshapulimala, Edalimedu, Sevenmalai, and Gundumala this year. In some areas, isolated plants have already begun flowering, indicating an early start to the season. Tourism stakeholders anticipate a heavy rush of visitors, adding urgency to the infrastructure concerns.

Munnar panchayat president S. Vijayakumar explained that the present bridge is too narrow and structurally weak, having suffered damage during the August 2018 floods. “When the highway route along the CSI church was disrupted, all vehicles from Adimaly, Marayur, and nearby areas were forced to use this narrow bridge to enter the town, resulting in hours-long traffic jams,” he said.

“Lakhs of visitors are expected to flock to the hill station during Onam and the Neelakurinji season. To address the situation, the panchayat has submitted a letter to the Chief Minister, Revenue Minister, and Tourism Minister, requesting the emergency construction of a Bailey bridge. We hope the government takes prompt, positive action,” Mr. Vijayakumar added.

G. Sojan, coordinator of the My Munnar Movement, an initiative promoting local tourism, noted that the hill station has faced a severe traffic crisis since the July mudslide. “When the main route was blocked, the entire flow of traffic into the town was disrupted,” he said.

According to officials, the Munnar CSI church route reopened for single-lane traffic on Friday evening. However, the area still poses a significant risk of mudslides, and authorities could impose a traffic ban on the route at any moment. “In the present situation, a Bailey bridge will help prevent recurring traffic blocks in Munnar,” an official source said.

A Bailey bridge is a portable, pre-fabricated, truss bridge that can be assembled quickly and is often used in emergency situations. Its construction would provide an alternative route for vehicles, easing congestion and ensuring that tourists can access the hill station safely during the peak season.

The panchayat's demand highlights the broader infrastructure challenges facing Munnar, a popular hill station that sees heavy traffic throughout the year. With the Neelakurinji bloom drawing national and international attention, the need for robust road infrastructure has become more pressing. Local residents and stakeholders hope that the government will act swiftly to prevent a repeat of the hours-long traffic jams experienced in recent weeks.
