Actresses Revathy and Padmapriya Quit Malayalam Film Body AMMA, Cite Lack of Reform
Veteran actors Revathy and Padmapriya have resigned from their primary membership of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), they announced in a joint statement posted on Instagram on Monday.
In their post, the actors wrote: “Today, we are resigning from our primary membership of AMMA. Not in anger, not in haste. Between us we have given decades to this industry, and we care where it goes next.” They added that for years they had asked for “safety, dignity, accountability and equal treatment”, but were met with “silence and the slow realisation that this institution, as it stands, is not ready to change.”
Despite resigning from the body, both actors made clear they would continue working in Malayalam cinema. “Malayalam cinema will always be ours to love and to work for. That never depended on a membership,” they said, ending with “See you at the cinemas.”
AMMA, the primary trade body for Malayalam film actors, has faced criticism in recent years over its handling of complaints related to workplace harassment and gender discrimination. The resignation of two prominent female members highlights ongoing concerns about the organisation’s willingness to reform.
