AAP MP Balbir Singh Seechewal requests transfer of his security personnel to police stations
Chandigarh, [Date]: In a move aimed at addressing the shortage of police personnel in Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal has requested the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav to reassign the six police officers currently deployed for his security to regular police duties.
In a letter to the DGP, Seechewal stated that of the six personnel, three are posted at his native village Seechewal, while the remaining travel with him. He highlighted that the decision was driven by concerns over increasing crime in rural areas, including a recent spate of thefts in his village where eight incidents occurred in a single night, with electricity wires being stolen. He also noted a rise in crimes at religious sites in Sultanpur Lodhi.
Seechewal, known for his social work, has consistently advocated for public causes. The move comes amid reports of a shortage of police personnel across Punjab, affecting law and order. The DGP has acknowledged the request and said the matter will be examined.
The development reflects a growing trend of elected officials voluntarily reducing security cover to conserve police resources, though such actions remain rare. The Punjab Police currently faces a shortfall of approximately 12,000 personnel, according to official data.
