646 Assam government schools lack electricity, 283 have no boys' toilets
GUWAHATI: A total of 646 government-run or aided schools in Assam have no electricity connection, while 283 schools lack separate toilets for boys, state Education Minister Ranoj Pegu informed the assembly on March 7, 2026.
These figures represent 1.53% and 0.64% respectively of the state's 44,243 government and aided schools. The minister noted that all schools have functional girls' toilets, and 643 schools are equipped with solar energy systems. He shared this information on the social media platform X.
The state government has allocated ₹4 crore in the current fiscal year to electrify all remaining schools. Mr. Pegu announced a target of March 2027 to provide complete essential infrastructure to these schools. Construction of boys' toilets in the 283 deficient schools has already begun this financial year.
Regarding digital infrastructure, 10,033 of the 10,965 schools managed by the government have at least one digital learning facility – such as an ICT lab, tele-education, or smart classroom. The remaining schools lack such facilities. This year, 328 additional schools will receive ICT labs, reducing the uncovered count to 608.
