50% Rebate on Traffic Fines: State Government Announces Limited Period Amnesty

The Karnataka state government has announced a 50 per cent rebate on penalties for various traffic offences. The rebate applies specifically to e-challans issued for offences recorded up to May 2026.

According to a statement from the Mangaluru City Police, the discounted penalty can be paid between June 21 and July 10, 2026. This amnesty period is intended to encourage compliance and reduce pending fines.

E-challans are electronic traffic tickets generated through automated systems or by traffic enforcement personnel. Offenders can avail the rebate by paying the reduced amount within the specified window. The rebate is available for all types of traffic violations captured via e-challan, including overspeeding, signal jumping, and improper parking.

The initiative is part of the government's effort to clear backlog of unpaid challans and promote digital payment of fines. Authorities have urged motorists to check their pending e-challans online and settle them during the amnesty period to benefit from the 50 per cent reduction.

It is important to note that the rebate does not apply to offences that have been adjudicated by a court or those involving compoundable offences where a separate process is required. The police have advised citizens to verify their e-challan status through official portals or at traffic police help desks.

This move is expected to benefit thousands of vehicle owners in the state, particularly those with multiple pending challans. The government has assured that the payment process is secure and can be completed through various digital modes, including mobile wallets and net banking.
