29-Year-Old Soldier Dies by Suicide at Nagrota Army Camp

JAMMU: A 29-year-old soldier, identified as Abhijit Nandan, died allegedly by suicide at an Army camp in Nagrota, on the outskirts of Jammu, early Monday, officials said.

Police stated that Nandan was found hanging at his place of posting. Authorities immediately rushed him to the military hospital in Satwari, where doctors declared him dead. The body was later shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Jammu for medico-legal formalities.

A team of police officers visited the scene and collected evidence. A detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident, officials added.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing concern over mental health issues among armed forces personnel. According to data from the Ministry of Defence, the number of suicides in the Indian Army has been a matter of serious attention, with various measures being implemented to address stress, including counselling services and helplines. The Army has also introduced initiatives like 'Operation Sadbhavana' to improve soldier welfare and morale.

In a statement, Army officials expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured full support during this difficult time. They emphasised the importance of mental well-being and urged personnel to seek help if needed.

The investigation will also look into possible factors such as personal stress, relationship issues, or professional pressures. The police and military authorities are coordinating to ensure a thorough probe.
