28 Dead as Monsoon Rains Batter Kerala, Gujarat, Maharashtra

At least 28 people have died in rain-related incidents across Kerala, Gujarat, and Maharashtra as heavy monsoon rains continue to lash parts of India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Tuesday.

In Kerala, three people were killed and several injured in a landslide in Wayanad district. Gujarat's Surat city reported five deaths due to rain-related incidents after extremely heavy rainfall over the past two days. Maharashtra's Palghar district witnessed the highest toll, with at least 20 deaths in the last few days of incessant showers.

The IMD has forecast heavy rains and thunderstorms in Kerala, Karnataka, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi over the coming days. A red alert has been issued for Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district, where the administration declared a holiday for schools and pre-university colleges on Wednesday. Tourists have been advised to avoid riversides, beaches, and hilly areas due to the risk of mudslides. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea, and taluk-level officials are on high alert.

In Delhi, the city recorded its wettest day of the year on Tuesday, causing waterlogging, uprooted trees, and traffic jams across the capital. Gurgaon in the National Capital Region also faced road cave-ins and flooding. Meanwhile, Mumbai, which endured two days of continuous downpour, saw rains ease on Tuesday, bringing road transport and local train services back to normal.

Authorities across the affected states are monitoring the situation and coordinating relief efforts. The IMD advises residents in vulnerable areas to stay indoors and follow official warnings.
