200 Detained and Released During Solidarity Protest for Sonam Wangchuk in Gujarat
Hundreds of young men and women participated in a demonstration on Wednesday at Gujarat University in solidarity with activist Sonam Wangchuk and the ongoing protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. The protest, scheduled around 6 pm, drew a significant number of participants who gathered to voice their support.
From the afternoon onwards, roads outside the university were filled with police personnel, vans, and patrolling vehicles. As the number of protesters increased, police took measures to prevent congregation and detained those holding placards or shouting slogans. Approximately 200 individuals were detained but later released, according to authorities.
Among those detained was Jignya Vyas, a popular Gujarati theatre actor, who entered a police van reciting the famous lines by Shailendra: "Tu zinda hai toh zindagi ki jeet pe yakeen kar" (If you are alive, believe in the victory of life).
The demonstration was conducted peacefully, and no injuries were reported. The identity of the organizers remained unclear, but the protest appeared to be part of a broader show of support for Wangchuk's causes, which include educational reform and environmental issues in Ladakh.
