13 Deer Found Dead in Madhya Pradesh Well: Forest Officials Suspect Accident During Stray Dog Chase
In a tragic incident, 13 deer were found dead in an agricultural well in Khardounkala village, Kalapipal tehsil, Shajapur district, Madhya Pradesh. The carcasses were discovered on Sunday by a farmer who noticed a strong foul smell while spraying pesticides in his field.
Forest officials who inspected the site reported that the deer—four males and nine females—appear to have died accidentally. Preliminary investigations suggest that the animals, while fleeing from a stray dog, fell into the well. The stray dog was also found dead at the scene.
The decomposed state of the carcasses indicates that the incident occurred several days prior to the discovery. After the farmer alerted village authorities, the local forest department and police were informed. The area has been cordoned off to preserve evidence, and an inquiry is underway.
Forest Department officials have stated that such accidents are not uncommon in rural areas where open wells often lie uncovered, posing a hazard to wildlife. They have urged farmers to cover wells securely to prevent similar tragedies. The remains of the deer were sent for post-mortem examination to rule out any other cause of death.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of human-wildlife conflict in the region. Conservationists have called for better protective measures, such as fencing around wells and awareness campaigns for local communities. The Madhya Pradesh Forest Department has assured that strict action will be taken if negligence is found.
Residents of Khardounkala expressed grief over the loss of the animals, which are a part of the local ecosystem. The deer species involved is believed to be the chital (spotted deer), commonly found in central India. The stray dog population in the area has also been a concern, with villagers noting an increase in feral dogs that sometimes chase wildlife.
As the inquiry continues, forest officials are examining whether the well was properly maintained or if any violations of wildlife protection laws occurred. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for coexistence and preventive measures to protect both wildlife and human interests.
