12 Indians Among 13 Dead in Qatar Gas Plant Explosion, Embassy Says

An explosion at a gas processing facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar on Sunday night has killed 13 people, including 12 Indian nationals, according to the Indian Embassy in Doha.

Qatar's Ministry of Interior stated that the incident was caused by a “technical malfunction” during operations. The ministry did not provide further details about the malfunction.

In a post on social media platform X on Monday, the Indian Embassy said, “Qatari authorities have confirmed that 12 Indian nationals have unfortunately passed away in the Ras Laffan incident yesterday night. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls.”

The identities of the deceased have not yet been released. The Embassy noted that many of the injured are also Indians and that their condition is “stable”.

Ras Laffan Industrial City is Qatar's central hub for natural gas, employing thousands of engineers, technicians, and manual labourers, many of whom are Indian nationals. The facility is a key part of Qatar's energy infrastructure.

This incident has drawn attention to the safety conditions for foreign workers in the region. Indian diplomatic officials are in contact with Qatari authorities to facilitate the repatriation of the bodies and provide assistance to the injured.

No further casualties have been reported, and investigations into the exact cause of the explosion are ongoing.
