Zoho's Sridhar Vembu Predicts AI Will Dominate All Future Technology
Sridhar Vembu, co-founder and former chief executive of Zoho, has sparked discussion online by stating that artificial intelligence (AI) will become the only technology that truly matters in the coming years. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) dated July 15, Vembu argued that all other forms of technology will eventually be overtaken and improved by AI.
“The premise behind the extraordinary AI investment wave is this: the only technology that will matter is AI. All other technology will be subsumed by AI because they can all be reinvented and vastly improved by a powerful enough AI,” Vembu wrote.
He elaborated with examples, suggesting AI could help solve climate change, find cures for cancer, address housing affordability in cities, and even help end war—though he acknowledged the last point might be speculative. “If you accept the fundamental premise and the concrete examples listed above, the only technology worth working on is AI,” he added.
The post quickly attracted responses from social media users. While some agreed with Vembu’s vision, others expressed skepticism about AI’s current capabilities. One user commented, “AI in its current form is sending back to us what we have put in the digital medium. All major problems are still open. No earth-shattering AI solution either.” Another said, “Not really. Every new technology promises to solve the same problems. AI goes next level again. The latest wrapper always creates interest and attracts investments. The same thing happened earlier too.” A third user noted, “There is another hidden premise: those who make the first move with the biggest amount of money will make the most of it. There are far too many variables including mathematics, software and hardware design. The biggest investments must make money before others catch up.”
This is not the first time Vembu has made bold predictions about AI. Earlier this year, he advised people who depend on writing code for a living to consider alternative livelihoods, including himself. “At this point, it is best for those of us who depend on writing code for a living to start considering alternative livelihoods. I include myself in this. I don’t say this in panic, but with calm acceptance and embrace,” he said at the time.
Vembu also weighed in on geopolitical developments. After the United States government temporarily restricted foreign access to certain AI models due to security concerns, he declared that “globalisation is dead” and called for India to urgently build sovereign AI capabilities.
