Armed gang murders 46-year-old man at Rajapalayam bus stand; two detained
The old bus stand in Rajapalayam, a busy transit point on the Madurai–Tenkasi route, witnessed a violent incident in the early hours of Saturday. A 46-year-old man was murdered by an armed gang near the stand. The victim, Thanikachalam, was a resident of Othakadai in Madurai and worked as a two-wheeler consultant-cum-mechanic. He lived with his family in Othakadai. He was associated with Hindu Munnani, police said.
According to preliminary inquiries, Thanikachalam had gone to Tirunelveli on Friday to offer condolences to a bereaved family. While returning to Madurai by bus, he alighted at the Rajapalayam old bus stand, though his ticket was booked till Madurai. A police officer said his mobile phone indicated that he intended to travel to Courtallam with some relatives and had made a last-minute change of plan to meet them at the bus stand.
Around 12:15 a.m., a group of youths on two-wheelers surrounded Thanikachalam and allegedly started a conversation with him. Sensing trouble, Thanikachalam moved away from the group. The gang, however, chased him and attacked him with deadly weapons. The attack was swift and caught bystanders off guard. He collapsed near the bus stand, unconscious and bleeding.
A bus crew member noticed the incident and immediately alerted the 108 emergency service. The ambulance rushed Thanikachalam to the Rajapalayam Government Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, the police said. Hospital sources said he had sustained multiple injuries.
A forensic team was pressed into service to collect evidence from the spot, police said. The area was cordoned off for investigation.
Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police Gowtham Goyal visited the spot and supervised the investigation. Rajapalayam Deputy Superintendent of Police Fasina Beevi, Inspector Chandran and the police team conducted inquiries. The police said they were investigating whether the murder was the result of a premeditated motive or a case of mistaken identity. Two suspects have been detained for questioning. Police are also verifying CCTV footage from nearby establishments.
Family members of the victim said he had no known enmity with anyone. They have demanded a thorough investigation and action against the culprits.
The murder sparked tension, and family members of the victim blocked Cotton Market Road for over 30 minutes, disrupting traffic on the busy Madurai–Tenkasi stretch. Police officials, led by Ms. Fasina Beevi, and Tahsildar Rahul Gandhi intervened and pacified the protesters, following which the road was cleared. The road was cleared after assurances of swift action and a thorough investigation.
Meanwhile, local shopkeepers have expressed concern over the law and order situation at the bus stand. They pointed out that only a fortnight ago, a gang had chased two teenaged boys at the same location. They have urged the police to deploy pickets and install more CCTV cameras, as the bus stand sees a significant number of commuters, including women and children. They also demanded regular police patrolling during late-night hours. Some shopkeepers also suggested increasing the number of police personnel in civilian clothes.
Rajapalayam North Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. A special team has been formed to expedite the probe. Further details are awaited as the interrogation of the detained suspects progresses. The police are treating the case as sensitive.
