Yogi Adityanath blames Congress for Partition; says Modi as PM in 1947 would have changed history

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, speaking at an event in Lucknow to mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, held the Congress party responsible for the Partition of India in 1947. He alleged that the Congress prioritised political power over national unity, a failure whose consequences continue to affect the country.

"The Congress party, in its quest for political gain, accepted the Partition of the country. The results of this mistake are still visible today," Adityanath said. He went on to claim, "Had Narendra Modi been the Prime Minister of India at the time of Independence, nobody would have been able to damage India in the slightest."

The Chief Minister's remarks come on a day designated by the Government of India to commemorate the victims of the Partition. August 14 is observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, a reminder of the immense human suffering, displacement, and violence that accompanied the division of British India into independent India and Pakistan.

Adityanath's statement is part of a broader political discourse around Partition's legacy. Historically, scholars have pointed to multiple factors behind the division, including the British policy of divide and rule, the demands of the Muslim League, and the failure of political negotiations among leaders of the time. The Congress party, which was then at the helm of the independence movement, has been criticised by various quarters over the years for accepting the Partition plan.

During his address, Adityanath also emphasised the importance of remembering the sacrifices of those who suffered during Partition. He urged citizens to learn from the past and work towards national unity and integrity.

The event in Lucknow was attended by several BJP leaders and supporters. The Congress party has yet to issue a formal response to the Chief Minister's specific charge.
