Wife of TMC Leader Jahangir Khan Arrested Over Attack on Police
The West Bengal Police have arrested the wife of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan in connection with an attack on police and central forces, officials said on Saturday.
Sarina Bibi, 37, was taken into custody two days after a violent protest at the Falta police station, during which an attempt was made to free Khan from police custody. Police sources said that 27 individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the incident.
Khan, a former TMC candidate from the Falta Assembly constituency, has been in custody since June 8 after being arrested at the Nepal border while allegedly attempting to flee India. He faces multiple allegations, including threats and election fraud.
According to police, Bibi led the protest at the police station on June 9, demanding her husband's release. The protest turned violent when the crowd attacked police personnel. Officers have stated that the attack was planned by Bibi, who was upset over the public display of her husband with a rope tied around his waist during police parades.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered a case against Bibi on charges of anti-state activities. Addressing a meeting in Falta, he warned of strict action, including potential confiscation of property, and stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law.
Jahangir Khan, an aide of TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, gained national attention after a public confrontation with IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma during the Assembly elections. Voting in Falta was cancelled in the second phase due to allegations of widespread malpractices. Khan withdrew from the contest just before the repoll, and the Bharatiya Janata Party won the seat with a record margin.
The investigation into the attack on the police station is ongoing.
