Wayanad Tunnel Accident: 3 Dead, 5 Missing After Debris Slip

A debris slip triggered by torrential monsoon rains at the construction site of the Meppadi-Kallady tunnel in Wayanad has resulted in at least three deaths and five people missing as of Tuesday, July 7, 2026. Rescue operations are underway to locate and extract those trapped.

Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan expressed condolences, describing the incident as extremely tragic and shocking. He called for urgent measures to rescue all individuals trapped underground and extended support for the actions taken by the state government and the Disaster Management department.

In a statement, Vijayan said, 'We share the grief of the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster. Immediate financial assistance should be provided to the dependents. The government should ensure free expert treatment and financial assistance to the injured. A serious investigation is required to determine whether there was any lapse and criminal negligence on the part of those concerned in taking emergency measures in this regard.'

The incident occurred amid heavy monsoon rains that have caused multiple landslides and debris slips in the region. Authorities are coordinating with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local teams to carry out rescue efforts.
