Wayanad debris slip death toll rises to 4, search on for missing

One more body has been recovered from the debris slip site in Wayanad, Kerala, bringing the total number of deaths in the disaster to four, state Minister A P Anilkumar announced on Thursday.

The body was recovered from zone 1 of the search area in the morning, the Minister told reporters. Search operations will continue in zones 1 and 2, with a focus on areas near the river, he added.

The debris slip occurred on July 7 at the site of the Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel project, which is under construction to connect Wayanad and Kozhikode districts. Four persons remain missing.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan had earlier stated that search operations would be given priority. Of the 10 persons injured in the incident, three have been discharged, four are hospitalised but stable, and three remain in the ICU, with two in critical condition.

The incident highlights the risks associated with infrastructure projects in ecologically sensitive areas like the Western Ghats. Authorities have urged caution amid ongoing rescue efforts.
