Wanted Meitei Insurgent Leader Arrested in Goa After 20 Years on the Run
Goa Police have arrested a wanted member of the proscribed Meitei insurgent group People’s Liberation Army (PLA) from South Goa, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Nongthongbam Ingo (also known as Krishna or Lal), had been evading arrest for two decades in connection with multiple cases.
A senior Goa police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the arrest was made on June 16 based on specific intelligence provided by Manipur Police. The crime branch of Goa Police intercepted Ingo, described as a 'self-styled Lieutenant Colonel', shortly after his arrival in Goa.
Police said Ingo was wanted by Manipur Police in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) at Lilong police station in Thoubal district, Manipur. The officer added that the accused was involved in financing operations of the PLA, a group banned under Indian law for its involvement in armed insurgency and violence.
The arrest highlights ongoing coordination between state police forces to track and apprehend individuals linked to insurgent groups operating in the northeastern region. Ingo is expected to be brought before a court in Goa before being handed over to Manipur Police for further investigation.
The People's Liberation Army, formed in the 1970s, seeks a separate independent state for the Meitei people in Manipur. It has been designated as a terrorist organization by the Government of India. The arrest is part of a broader effort to dismantle the financial networks supporting such groups.
