Uttarakhand Row: Congress Alleges Caste Bias in Venue 'Purification' After Kharge Rally
A political controversy has erupted in Uttarakhand's Haldwani after a religious "purification" ceremony was conducted at the Ramlila Ground, a venue where Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had held a rally on August 8. The state Congress unit has accused the Shri Ram Sena, a right-wing Hindu group, of performing the ritual as a reaction to Kharge's caste identity. The BJP has dismissed the claim, saying the ceremony was a response to slogans raised at the rally that offended the Sanatan community.
Uttarakhand Congress chief Ganesh Godiyal alleged that the Shri Ram Sena is associated with the BJP. He said the group's actions were a "crime against humanity" and a clear attempt to divide society on caste lines. "This shows the fundamental difference in ideology between the Congress, which believes in social equality, and the BJP, which thrives on caste-based polarisation," Godiyal said in a statement. He also questioned why the Nainital senior superintendent of police had not taken action against the group despite the provocative nature of the ritual.
Godiyal's allegations were immediately challenged by the BJP. Party state spokesperson and Cabinet Minister Khajan Das said the Congress was trying to malign the BJP for political gain. He asserted that no member of the Shri Ram Sena is affiliated with the party. Das said the ceremony was held because of "objectionable slogans" chanted during Kharge's rally, which hurt the religious sentiments of the Sanatan community. "The Ramlila Ground is not just an ordinary venue; it is a place of worship and cultural significance. The slogans raised there were inappropriate," Das said.
Das further accused the Congress of having historically undermined Dalit leaders. "The Congress never showed respect to leaders like Sitaram Kesri, Babu Jagjivan Ram, or Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. They are now shedding crocodile tears over the issue," he said.
The term "shuddhikaran" has a charged history in Indian political discourse. It has been used by certain groups to assert religious purity, and civil liberties organisations have often condemned such rituals as discriminatory. The Congress's framing of the incident points to the constitutional guarantee of equality, while the BJP's defence rests on the perceived violation of religious sentiment at a revered venue.
The exchange of accusations has once again highlighted how religious spaces can become flashpoints for political conflict. While the Congress has called for legal action against the Shri Ram Sena, the BJP has maintained that the group acted on its own, out of spontaneous anger over the rally's slogans.
As of Wednesday evening, no police complaint had been registered by either side. The Nainital police have remained silent on the matter, and it is unclear whether an inquiry will be initiated. Local residents are divided in their reactions. Some condemned the purification ceremony as a retrograde step that could deepen social divides. Others defended it, arguing that the venue should be treated with respect and that political parties should not use religious sites for provocations.
The incident has intensified the political debate over the use of religious places for political events and the role of caste in public life. Without a formal complaint, the matter rests on competing claims by the two parties.
