US Military Strikes on Iran Continue for Sixth Night, Targeting Military Capabilities
US forces launched another wave of military strikes against Iran on Thursday, marking the sixth consecutive night of operations. The strikes come amid heightened tensions between the two countries following the breakdown of a 14-point memorandum of understanding, the details of which remain unclear.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the strikes, which began at 2 p.m. Eastern Time, aimed to further degrade Iranian military capabilities. CENTCOM claimed that these capabilities pose a threat to commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for global oil shipments.
Iranian state media, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), reported multiple explosions in southern Iran following what it described as American air raids. According to IRIB, explosions were heard in the western parts of Bandar Abbas, a key port city, and in Bushehr province. The Governor of Bushehr confirmed two explosions, calling them continued American aggression.
IRIB also cited the Public Relations Department of Hormuzgan University of Medical Sciences, reporting that seven people were injured in an attack on the Tappe Allah Akbar residential neighbourhood in Bandar Abbas. Rescue and medical personnel were placed on full alert, and treatment was provided to the injured. Additionally, eight explosions were reported in the area of Masan village on Qeshm Island.
CENTCOM said the operation employed precision-guided munitions and targeted command centres, air defence systems, missile and drone capabilities, and coastal surveillance facilities. The strikes concluded the previous night's operations at 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 15, according to CENTCOM. Specific targets included locations in Bandar Abbas.
The US maintains that these actions are necessary to protect innocent mariners and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has not yet issued an official response to the latest strikes, but earlier reports from Iranian media condemned them as a violation of its sovereignty.
