US Launches Fresh Strikes in Iran After Strait of Hormuz Vessel Attack

The United States has carried out a third round of strikes against Iran, following an incident in the Strait of Hormuz where a civilian vessel was hit by Iranian fire. The attack on the Cyprus-flagged container ship, which US Central Command says suffered significant engine room damage, has further strained an already fragile ceasefire between the two nations.

Iranian state media reported explosions in the coastal towns of Bandar Abbas and Sirik along the strait's shores. The US military stated it was 'imposing a heavy cost' on Iran for its actions, which it said threatened civilian mariners and commercial shipping in the critical waterway.

The incident began when Iran claimed its military fired a warning shot at a vessel using an unauthorised route, inadvertently striking it and leading to the closure of the strait. A civilian crew member remains missing, according to US Central Command. The developments jeopardise the tenuous ceasefire agreement that had been in place, raising concerns about broader regional stability.

Both sides have provided conflicting accounts of the sequence of events, with Iran asserting its actions were defensive and the US alleging a deliberate attack on civilian navigation. No independent verification of the claims has been possible.
